There are many things you can do to improve or detract from the energy efficiency of your home. Avoid these 10 common mistakes to get the most out of your heating bill this winter.

Heating an unoccupied home.

If you don’t work from home most of the day or are away for the weekend, don’t turn up the heat as much as you would if you were at home relaxing. Purchase a programmable thermostat to save money on your utility bills. Set the temperature down while you are away and warm up before you leave.

Leave windows unlocked.

Sure, you leave your windows closed in the winter. But have you forgotten to lock them? If your windows are not tightly sealed, cold air can enter your home and the warm air created by your cooker can leak outside. Be sure to lock all windows during the winter months.

Thermostat temperatures rise.

It is a mistake to set the thermostat higher than necessary to warm up the house quickly. If the thermostat is set too high, the heating rate will not change. The furnace will run longer and your utility bills will be higher.

Not changing the air filter.

When the air filter gets dirty, the furnace has to work harder and therefore uses more energy. Air filters should be changed regularly. The system will function more efficiently and more economically.

Ignore leaks and drafts.

Do not underestimate the amount of heat lost through leaks and drafts. Check all doors, windows, and exterior walls for drafts. Seal and caulk any areas where cold air can enter and warm air can escape. Basements and attics require special attention. They are usually the worst offenders.
