I of course love summer because of the sunshine and warm weather. But I also love summer because of all the delicious in-season produce! Watermelon has always been my favorite summer fruit, and thankfully my super picky kids also feel the same way. However, bringing home a giant watermelon and attempting to cut it properly can be a little intimidating. But it won’t be after learning these simple yet clever hacks.
YouTuber Jennifer Jenner shared a video explaining a genius way to cut and serve watermelon that I wish I had known about years ago. Her method is based in two parts: cutting the watermelon and serving it. You want to start by cutting your watermelon in half using short cuts that pierce the rind. Once you’ve gone around the watermelon, it will split in half.
Once the watermelon has been cut in half, flip the watermelon so that the fleshy side is face-down on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut off pieces of the rind in strips, followed by the top. You can also trim off any leftover white parts of the watermelon at this stage.
Next, cut the watermelon into slices. When you’ve finished, rotate your cutting board 90 degrees and make slices in the other direction. To finish, place a bowl over top of the watermelon you’ve just sliced and flip the bowl, holding the cutting board in place to keep the watermelon in the bowl. You’ll be left with perfectly sliced watermelon pieces with no rind to worry about.
I always love learning these incredibly easy yet incredibly helpful hacks. I don’t know about you, but I’ll surely never look at prepping a watermelon the same way again. Enjoy!
