Everyone gets a headache from time to time. But if you’re someone who suffers from regular headaches, your bathroom cabinet is likely stocked with Advil, Tylenol, and other popular headache-fighting drugs. Although these products can be very effective, you may not feel great about reaching for them all the time. Thankfully, there are a few different products that can help you fight off your headache the natural way.
1. Peppermint Oil
When applied on the forehead or temples, peppermint essential oil can help to alleviate a headache. Just remember that essential oil should only be applied topically when mixed with a carrier oil. This is especially important for people with sensitive skin, as the properties in the oil can be very powerful and irritating to some.
2. Ginger
Ginger is truly an amazing food. Ginger from the root can cause swelling in your head to go down when ingested, and it’s also great for targeting nausea (and hangovers!). If you aren’t into the idea of eating it raw (like how they serve it with sushi), incorporate some into your tea.
3. Low-Fat Milk
Milk is a hydrating liquid, but it’s also full of calcium that works to target sodium intakes. Sodium leads to dehydration, and dehydration is one of the most common headache triggers, so drink up!
4. Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe is full of water, potassium, and magnesium. All of these things work together to combat dehydration and low blood sugar — both of which lead to headaches. Plus, it’s absolutely delicious!
5. Fatty Fish
Fatty fish (like salmon and tuna) are full of omega-3 fatty acids which are excellent anti-inflammatory properties. One single serving is also packed with vitamins that can help to alleviate some of the pressure on your head.
