There is no such thing as the perfect parent, and we can all improve, no matter how advanced we think we are. If you are a parent, you know this all too well.

Children are not as simple as many people make them out to be. They need a lot more enrichment than you might think. Today’s children are not being raised the same way as people of the past, and that is something we all have to accept. However, if you are not doing the following things, you may want to think about it.

Below I will go over some of the things that parents should do that most don’t seem to care about. Some of these tips come from prominent people in the world of psychology, and others are things I have noticed over the years. The more you think about them, the more I’m sure you’ll agree that they are much more important than we tend to think.

8 Things Not Every Parent Does But Should Do:

Have dinner together at least once a week (if not every day).
Having dinner together is a way to bring the family together. While it’s not always possible to eat every meal together in this day and age, regardless of your schedule, you should be able to have one meal together per week (the more the better). While dinner is ideal if you work nights, breakfast is sometimes a better option.
Schedule screen-free time during the day.
There should be times during the day when children, as well as parents, are not looking at any type of screen. TVs are turned off and cell phones are put away. Everyone spends time doing things, together or separately, that have nothing to do with electronics.
Make sure they spend time playing outside.
Don’t be afraid to let your kids get dirty outside. Let them go outside and be kids. Spending all their time cooped up inside watching TV is not good for them. They need nature, let them enjoy it.
Teach them to speak for themselves.
Don’t talk for your children all the time. Sure, there may be times when they get too nervous and you have to do it, but let them talk as often as possible. If someone asks their name, let them answer. This helps them prepare for the times when you won’t be around them.
Make sure they know that the world does not revolve around them.
Don’t spoil your children too much. Sure, you can give them all the things you didn’t have and more, but you shouldn’t make them think they are better than others. Teach them compassion and make them realize that sometimes they can’t have everything they want.
Let them choose their own interests within reason.
Let them be themselves, don’t force them to be what you want them to be. Let your children choose what sports they play, or if they play any. Don’t select parts of their lives to make them someone you can live with.
Let them make their own mistakes sometimes.
Don’t duplicate everything your children do. Let them make their own mistakes. Sometimes you won’t be there to watch them and fix things. They need to learn things for themselves.
Let them feel the bad feelings as well as the good ones.
Sure, it can hurt when your kids are upset, but those unpleasant emotions can’t be avoided by anyone. They need to learn to deal with them before they get out into the real world. Don’t refuse to let them feel the things they should feel. Life is hard.
