Cookie dough is a sweet treat made by coating chocolate chip cookie dough with melted semi-sweet chocolate. Below is a semi-homemade version, but for a tastier, completely homemade version, try my edible cookie dough. For another delicious bite-sized treat, try my Oreo Truffles.
Ingredients and substitutions
Cookie Dough : You can use commercial cookie dough or make your own.
Chocolate : Always use a baking chocolate bar as a coating. Semi-sweet chocolate is recommended to get a good balance of sweetness, but you can also use milk or dark chocolate if you prefer. Avoid using chocolate chips as they do not melt smoothly into the cookie dough and are difficult to spread.
How to melt chocolate
Melt chocolate in the microwave
- Place the chopped chocolate and oil in a microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat, stirring every 20 seconds, until the chocolate is melted.
- Once melted and smooth, let sit for 5 minutes before adding to cookie dough.
How to melt chocolate in a double boiler
- Fill the pan halfway with water and bring to a low boil.
- Prepare a heat-resistant bowl (glass or stainless steel) that can be placed in the pan. Make sure the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. The steam will melt the chocolate.
- Place the chocolate and oil in a heatproof bowl.
- Stir with a rubber spatula over low heat until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
- Once melted and smooth, allow the chocolate to cool for a few minutes before dipping into the cookie dough.
Cookie Dough Hearts
For a fun Valentine’s Day treat, follow these steps to make cookie dough hearts.
- Spread the cookie dough evenly on the bottom of the pan.
- Press out hearts with a heart-shaped cookie cutter and place on a sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Freeze the heart-shaped cookie dough so that it is coated.
- Use buttercream to write fun words on each heart.
How to store and freeze cookie dough balls
- The candies can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
- To freeze, first wait until the chocolate coating has set. Next, place the coated cookie dough balls in a labeled and dated freezer bag or container for up to one month of storage. Defrost before serving.
