This is authentic! I lived in Germany for 3+ years, and this is the way my German neighbor taught me to make delicious sauerkraut. Takes a bit more time than just opening up a briny can of kraut and heating thru on the stove … but it is SO worth it. Add some nicely browned Bratwurst, some applesauce (Apfelmousse), some fries (Pommes Frites), some brown bread (Graubrot or Schwarzbrot)… and you have a great meal, as prepared in the style of the Hessen region of German
Ingredients :
- GERMAN SAUERKRAUT:
- 3 Tbspbutter
- 1 mediumgranny smith apple
- 1 smallonion, slivered
- 2 ccold-pack sauerkraut – good quality, not canned
- 1/4 clight brown sugar
- 1/2 clight brown beer
- 1/8 tspblack pepper
- 1/2 tspcaraway seed, optional
- BRATWURST:
- 6good quality bratwurst
- 1 1/2 cwater
- 2 Tbspbutter
- BACON ONION POTATOES
- 3 slicebacon, or 2 tbsp. of real bacon bits
- 1/4 conions, diced or slivered
- 1/2 cbalsamic vinaigrette
- 4 smallpotatoes, sliced 1/4″ thick
- 3 Tbspbrown sugar
- 1/2 tspseasoned salt
- 1/4 tsppepper
