This old-fashioned berry tart, made from scratch, is super easy to make and delicious. With only 10 minutes of prep time, it’s one you’ll want to make on a regular basis. Prepare the best pie of your life!

Nothing beats a good old-fashioned, real pie. Especially in the height of summer, when fresh and abundant berries are available, you could eat it every day. Although we have the convenience of a food processor, it is still more authentic to make it by hand and cut the butter with a pastry cutter. The simplicity of this recipe allows you to savor it slowly. Pick berries and enjoy a delicious dessert together.

Frozen berries with fresh berries.

We like to use fresh berries in our tarts, but you can also use frozen berries. When frozen, the thawed berries can become a bit unstable due to the extra water on them. To compensate for this, double the amount of cornstarch in the recipe if using frozen fruit.

Can I use other fruits in my traditional berry tart?

Absolutely. Just substitute 3 pounds of fresh fruit of your choice. Just make sure everything is ready (peeled, sliced and crusted).

Pie crust.

Whether or not to put a bottom crust on a pie is actually a heated debate among some people. The definition is that a pie has no bottom crust. The bottom of a pie is usually fruit and the top is usually sweet cookie dough, although some pies have a more cake-like consistency. Some people still swear that they put a bottom crust on their pies, but this is not the traditional way.

Pies made with bread crumbs.

Pies are usually covered with dough, while crisps are usually covered with a crumbly mixture of flour, oatmeal or other grains, butter, sugar, and sometimes nuts. Both have their own good qualities and are very tasty.

Can I halve this recipe?

Yes, you can. This recipe, as written, makes a whole 9 x 13 pan, which may be a bit much for some people. You can halve all the ingredients in this recipe to make a 9 x 9 pan.

How to Store and Reheat

This dish will keep, covered and refrigerated, for up to 5 days once cooled. This dish can be served cold. The easiest way to reheat is to place one serving on a plate or bowl and microwave for 30 seconds at a time.
