I have no problem admitting that I don’t have an artistic bone in my body. That’s why I’m always so impressed by people who have great artistic talent. While some artists prefer paint or clay as a medium, sculptor Chris Miller prefers granite, wood, marble and other stone. He creates extremely realistic stone sculptures of vintage trucks and cars that seem to fit perfectly into their surroundings.
Chris began sculpting in 1976, and is primarily self-taught. “For reasons I don’t understand, I’ve always needed to make things. If you’re not sculpting, you’re building a house, a solid stone wall, furniture or some kind of structure. It’s always been important to me to create something. And the harder it is, the better,” Chris explains.
And what could be more difficult than creating antique stone vehicles? The old stone truck was part of a community sculptural installation created by the crowd. It even features a beautiful flower bed in the “bed” of the truck. While Chris is not the artist behind the VW Beetle built in a field near Ithaca, New York, it inspired him to take on projects like the vintage stone truck.
