In a poignant story of love and unexpected connections, a single mother, Tricia Somers, faced the daunting reality of a terminal liver cancer diagnosis. Her primary concern centered on the fate of her 8-year-old son, Wesley, as her parents had passed away, leaving her with a sense of desperation.

Enter Tricia Seaman, an oncology nurse at Pinnacle Health Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. During Somers’ ten-day stay at the hospital, a profound bond developed between the two women. Despite the short duration of their acquaintance, Somers felt an unspoken connection with Seaman, describing her as an “angel” who provided unparalleled comfort during a challenging time.

On her final day in the hospital, Somers mustered the courage to express her last dying wish to Seaman — the adoption of her son, Wesley. The nurse, touched by the request, took a diplomatic stance, urging Somers to give it careful thought. Fate seemed to be at play, as Seaman and her family had recently become foster parents and were in the process of adoption approval.

Following the request, Seaman and Somers embarked on a journey to acquaint Wesley with his potential new family. Visits to each other’s homes and genuine efforts to ensure everyone felt comfortable transpired, creating a foundation for a unique familial connection.

As Somers battled through chemotherapy and entered hospice care, Seaman went above and beyond her role as a nurse. She welcomed Wesley and Tricia into her home, affirming that they were not just patients but family. The once-bleak prognosis began to change, and Somers experienced unexpected improvements in her health.

In a heartwarming turn of events, Seaman and her husband, Daniel, signed adoption papers, officially making Wesley a part of their family. The Seaman family, along with Somers, embarked on a memorable vacation, cherishing the time they had together.

Tragically, on December 7, 2014, Tricia Somers passed away at the age of 45. Despite the loss, her spirit endured through the family she entrusted her son to. Seaman, deeply impacted by Somers, immortalized their bond in a book titled “God Gave Me You.”

Wesley, now living with his adoptive parents and four siblings, continues to be grateful for the love and support he has found in his new family. In this touching narrative, the indomitable spirit of a mother lives on, shaping the destiny of a young boy through the unexpected gift of compassion and adoption.
