Charlotte Sapwell, 27, is a single mother of two facing a major dilemma. After a recent divorce, she and her children found themselves homeless, and she didn’t want the financial burden of a $400,000 mortgage. What could she do? Charlotte got creative and decided to build a little house for herself and her two children in her grandfather’s backyard.

For five months, Charlotte and her grandfather worked day and night to build and finish their 10 x 20-foot cottage. The project cost just over $10,000, and Charlotte built 99% of the house herself. The casita consists of a living room, kitchen, dining room and master bedroom, while Charlotte’s two young children share a separate bedroom. Charlotte’s two young children share a separate bedroom. “I went from a huge house with my husband and kids to a tiny rented place and then to this tiny space, and of all the places I’ve lived, this is my favorite,” Charlotte revealed. “It’s all mine. The kids are here all the time and we’re very close. Yes, that means we have virtually no privacy, but I love it,” she added.

“I don’t know how long we’ll be in this space, but I can’t imagine living anywhere but a tiny house,” she continues. “I’ve learned to appreciate what I have and embrace minimalism. I just want other women to know they can do anything. And I want my kids to know that it doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl, anyone can make a future for themselves,” she adds.

By building this little house, Charlotte has shown that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. This mother faced a difficult situation, but persevered and ended up with a great new life for her and her children. Hats off to Charlotte for her determination and creativity.
