- Improve soil drainage in planters
Eggshells are a great way to improve drainage in potted planters. Instead of rocks, Seeds Now suggests adding broken eggshells to the bottom of a planter to allow for drainage. Not only will the container be lighter and easier to handle, but there will also be improved air circulation. In addition, the eggshells will decompose and provide nutrients to the plant. You will need to replace the soil and eggshells every season or two, but this is generally a best practice. - Keep the cats away
Do you have a neighborhood cat that likes to use your garden bed as a litter box? One Good Thing by Jillee recommends shells as eggshells. Walking on broken eggshells should be enough to keep cats out. - compost tea
Admittedly, eggshells can take some time to decompose in the compost bin. So making compost tea with eggs might be more satisfying. SF Gate suggests boiling a gallon of water and adding 10 to 20 clean, dry eggshells. Let the eggshells soak overnight, then strain the liquid. The water, now infused with nutrients such as potassium and calcium, makes an excellent liquid fertilizer.
