Although ovens have been around for a long time, they have gained popularity over the years because of their versatile functions. If you think you know how to use your oven to its fullest, think again, because there is a trick with the oven rack that you probably didn’t know existed that will save you time.

Today, everyone is looking for time and cost saving tricks. Here is one you can do with the oven rack.

How to use the oven rack differently?
Very few people know this trick. It is in fact a time-saving alternative to the toaster. Since the latter can only prepare two toasts in general, the oven rack allows you to prepare breakfast for the whole family with toast. The other advantage is that you can monitor the cooking process through the oven window to get the desired golden hue. Here’s how to do it:

  • Place the rack in the oven in the middle position, then put the oven tray underneath in the lowest position and preheat it for a few minutes to 150-180 °C.
  • Then slide the bread slices vertically through the racks so that they stand upright (the baking sheet underneath will prevent them from sliding).
  • Turn on the broiler and cook for a minute or two, otherwise watch through the oven window and remove your toast when it is golden brown.

How do I properly position the oven rack to achieve the desired cooking results?
The top of the oven allows you to broil food and cook dishes at the highest temperature to give them a crisp, flavorful appearance. This is ideal for roasting chicken or browning au gratin.

The middle of the oven is usually the lowest risk position, as it allows you to cook food at a moderate temperature. This is perfect for baking cakes or lasagna.
When food is placed in the bottom of the oven, it exposes it directly to intense heat. This is ideal for browning the underside of certain foods such as frozen pizzas, focaccia or pies.
Please note that to use the oven rack, especially for toasting your bread, it should be cleaned thoroughly and free of any dirt or grease.

How to clean the oven rack without chemicals?
Degreasing the oven rack is not a fun task, especially if it is not maintained regularly. Indeed, the oven rack can quickly become covered with grease, dirt and cooking residues. But here’s an effective technique to remove the grime and make it shine again, without too much effort.

How to clean the oven rack with vinegar and baking soda?

White vinegar dissolves grease because of the acetic acid it contains. Baking soda not only removes oil stains and burnt food residue that stick to the grill, but also absorbs unpleasant odours.

What you need:
White vinegar
Baking soda
A scrubbing sponge
How to do it:
Place your oven rack in your empty tub
Sprinkle baking soda on it, then spray with a generous amount of white vinegar.
Leave it on for about 10 minutes. The baking soda will react with the vinegar, creating a kind of foam that will dissolve much of the grime.
Next, scrub the grill vigorously with the scrubbing sponge.
Run hot water into the tub until it completely covers the grate.
It is best to leave it on overnight.
The next day, scrub a second time using an old toothbrush to remove any remaining dirt.
Rinse the rack with clean water and let it air dry before putting it back in the oven.
