Rust is a red coating of iron oxide that forms on steel and iron. Rust can also form on household items and ruins them. There are numerous ways to remove rust, but you know, prevention is better than cure, that is why it is best to remove rust while still fresh (during the oxidation before it takes over the entire utensil).
If you notice a rusty spot on your pan, tools, machinery, etc, don’t throw them away, instead, use these 6 hacks to remove rust from your objects.
1. Coke
Coke is a delicious drink that can surely refresh you during hot summer days, but it has more uses than just drinking. Coke can actually help you remove rust if you pour it on the rusty spot in your pan and let it sit for a couple of minutes before wiping out the pan with tinfoil.
2. Vinegar
Vinegar is a super agent that has countless uses like removing rust. Simply soak your rusty tools in a container full of vinegar to dissolve the rust. Let the tools sit for a couple of hours, then use warm water to rinse the rust off them.
3. Baking soda
Just like vinegar, baking soda is a super agent that has countless uses. To use baking soda against rust, mix it with water to create a paste, then start spreading it all over the rusted areas and let it sit for a while. After a few moments, you’ll see that rust is getting loose and that’s the perfect moment to use a sponge to scrub the rust off.
4. Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is used to clean cuts because it kills infections very quickly and effectively. Simply pour some hydrogen peroxide on the rusted areas and let it bubble before using steel wool to scrub off the loose rust.
5. Lemons
Rust can be removed with the help of acid and citrus fruits have a sufficient quantity of acid. Sprinkle salt in the rusted pan, then squeeze or pour lemon juice all over it and scrub the mixture using the lemon rind. This method will leave you with a rust-free pan that looks brand new.
6. Potato
The use of potato is very similar to the lemon use, the only difference is that you won’t squeeze the potato for juice. Coat the pan with salt, then use half a potato to scrub over the salt (make sure to use the cut side).
