The idea of living in a small house is certainly intriguing. The concept offers several appealing benefits, such as the elimination of rent or mortgage payments, and the efficient use of space tailored to one’s immediate needs. This minimalist lifestyle often leads to financial freedom and a simpler, more sustainable way of living. While living in a tiny house can be ideal for an individual or a couple, providing just enough space for essential activities and belongings, it becomes a different story when considering the needs of an entire family. The limited square footage can make it challenging to accommodate multiple people, each with their own requirements for privacy, storage, and personal space.
To address this challenge, an inventive family came up with a creative solution. They took two small houses and ingeniously connected them with a solarium, effectively doubling their living space while adding a beautiful, sunlit area that serves as a common room. This not only provided the extra room needed to comfortably house a family but also created a unique and aesthetically pleasing living environment. The solarium acts as a versatile space that can be used for various purposes, such as a dining area, a greenhouse for growing plants, or simply a cozy spot to relax and enjoy natural light. This innovative approach demonstrates how flexible and imaginative solutions can transform tiny house living, making it practical and enjoyable for larger households.
Viva Collectiv designed and built this tiny house for a family of four. This particular model, called “La Ohana,” consists of two small houses of 174 square feet each connected by a 240-square-foot solarium with a glass roof.
The kitchen is bright, cozy, and equipped with a refrigerator, sink, stove, and washer/dryer.
The small living room on the right features a comfortable yet modern lounge area with a large sofa.
Living in a tiny house not only provides financial freedom but also encourages a creative approach to family living space. The reduced costs associated with smaller homes—such as lower utility bills, maintenance expenses, and the absence of hefty mortgage payments—allow families to save money and potentially invest in other areas of their lives, such as travel, education, or hobbies. Additionally, the compact nature of tiny houses fosters a sense of closeness and intimacy among family members, as it requires everyone to share space and spend more time together.
The clever connection of two small houses through a solarium offers a unique solution to meet the needs of a family while preserving the charm of intimacy. This innovative design creates a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. The solarium serves as a bright, airy link between the two structures, providing a versatile space that can be used for various activities such as dining, entertaining, or relaxing. This addition not only enhances the overall living experience by bringing in natural light and offering views of the outdoors but also adds a touch of elegance and modernity to the home.
It’s an innovative way to rethink home architecture, maximizing space utilization without compromising comfort and style. By merging two small houses and adding a solarium, families can enjoy the benefits of a larger living area while still embracing the minimalist lifestyle associated with tiny house living. This approach to home design encourages creative problem-solving and resourcefulness, proving that limited space doesn’t have to mean limited possibilities. Instead, it opens up new avenues for inventive and sustainable living solutions that cater to the diverse needs of modern families.
