Loading the dishwasher might seem like a mundane task that we often do without much thought, but it turns out there’s a proper technique for arranging your silverware that can make a difference.

While some folks swear by placing silverware face up in the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning, others worry about the risk of getting accidentally stabbed or poked by sharp utensils. So, what’s the best approach?

When it comes to knives, dishwasher industry experts unanimously agree on one point: load them blade-side down to prevent potential injuries when loading or unloading the dishwasher. However, the consensus isn’t as clear-cut when it comes to forks and spoons.

Emilio Gonzalez, who directs Consumer Reports’ testing program, suggests consulting your dishwasher’s manual for specific safety recommendations. In general, though, Gonzalez advises, “Place spoons and forks facing up and knives facing down to minimize the risk of injury and to ensure better cleaning.” The idea behind this is that having spoons and forks face upward exposes them to more water pressure, helping to clean them more effectively.

So, the rule of thumb is simple: knives should always go blade-side down to prevent accidents, while spoons and forks can go in an upright position to improve cleaning.

If you’re not a fan of using the dishwasher altogether, you can always opt for the traditional method of washing your silverware by hand with warm, soapy water.
