It seems like every day we hear about a new outbreak of bacteria or food contamination. And while we like to think that fruit is pretty safe, this recent widespread outbreak seems to prove otherwise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning Americans of a multi-state outbreak of salmonella linked to pre-cut melon.
According to the official report released by the CDC, 77 people in nine different states reported becoming ill after eating pre-cut cantaloupe or watermelon or fruit salad mix with melon purchased at grocery stores. Of these 77 people, 36 were hospitalized. Evidence suggests that pre-cut melon supplied by Caito Foods, LLC of Indianapolis, Indiana, was likely the source of the outbreak. States affected by the outbreak include Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee.
Although the CDC reports that the outbreak seems to be under control as of July 26th, they are urging anyone who has bought pre-cut melon in recent months to thoroughly wash and sanitize their refrigerator drawers and shelves. Because this outbreak is so recent, it probably wouldn’t hurt to avoid pre-cut melon for the next short while, just to be extra safe.
The CDC also explains that nearly half of all foodborne illnesses are caused by germs on fresh fruits and vegetables. They advise consumers, restaurants and retailers to always choose and handle fruit safely to help prevent foodborne illness.
We’re not saying you should never eat pre-cut melon again. However, it is important to stay informed about recalls and contamination issues to keep you and your family happy and healthy.
