Daily life is filled with minor mishaps, and one of the most frustrating situations is when a key snaps off inside a lock, especially if it’s the key to your home. Before rushing to call a professional locksmith, consider trying these DIY methods to free a trapped key without dismantling the entire lock.

If the Door is Locked:

1. Magnetic Magic

Materials needed: A strong magnet.

Procedure: Begin by applying a lubricant to the key. Next, position the magnet close to the key, allowing it to cling to the magnet. This should make it easier to extract the broken key.

2. Precision with Pliers

Materials needed: Needle-nose pliers or fine-tipped scissors.

Procedure: After lubricating around the key, carefully use the pliers or scissors to grasp the protruding piece of the key. Gently attempt to extract the key, taking care not to push it deeper into the lock.

If the Door is Unlocked:

1. Scissor Solution

Procedure: If the key is trapped with the door unlocked, find a pair of fine-tipped scissors. From the opposite side of the door (inside the home), slide one scissor tip until it contacts the broken key. Push gently to nudge the key outward. If it doesn’t come out entirely, use pliers to draw it out.

2. Key to the Rescue

Procedure: This method is similar to the scissor solution but uses another key. Insert this second key into the lock from the opposite side to push the broken key outward.

3. The Silicone Savior

This technique has gained popularity on social media for its effectiveness.

Procedure: Ensure that the broken key is standing upright inside the lock. Lightly heat a piece of silicone with a lighter until it becomes molten. Quickly press the molten silicone against the lock, covering the trapped key. Hold firmly for about a minute until the silicone solidifies. Gently pull back on the silicone, and the key should follow. Be careful not to break the silicone during this process.

While these methods can be effective in many cases, always remember that if you’re uncertain or if the key remains stubbornly stuck, consulting a locksmith is the safest option to ensure that no further damage is done to the lock or the key.
