It’s more than likely that you have a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser somewhere in your home. Whether it’s a scuff, mark, or stain, there are few problems a Magic Eraser can’t solve. However, for such a little sponge, Magic Erasers are pretty pricey (about $5 for just four squares of foam). So if you had the chance to save some money, you probably would, right?

Thanks to the fine folks at How Do It, you can seriously shave off some money when it comes to your cleaning products. They revealed that Magic Erasers are simply pieces of melamine foam. And melamine foam is an excellent soft yet abrasive cleaning tool. The best part is, you can buy about 30 squares of melamine foam for just $5, as opposed to four squares of Magic Erasers for the same price.

While water and melamine sponges are a good combination, these squares are even more effective when soaked in a cleaning agent before use. According to CNET, all you need to do is mix together one teaspoon of Borax, one tablespoon of baking soda, and half a cup of warm water. Place the sponge in the bowl, allow it to absorb the solution, then squeeze out the excess.
