In vehicles built before the late 1980s, it was recommended that the engine be kept at idle for a few minutes before driving to ensure that the engine received the proper amount of air and fuel. However, with the advent of electronic fuel injection in the mid-1990s, this practice was no longer necessary. But that would explain why, all these years later, people still think they should leave their cars running in winter before driving.

The take-away sale? There’s really no need to leave modern vehicles idle before driving in winter. Not only is this practice potentially dangerous to your vehicle’s engine, but it is also very harmful to the environment. Dress warmly, start your car and make sure there are no warning lights on the dashboard, but that’s all you have to do before you hit the road – drive carefully this winter, everyone! And for those of you who live in places where it’s hot all year round, I’m incredibly envious.
