Giles Robinson, head hairdresser at John Frieda Salons in the UK, explains that the secret to finding the perfect hair length is in a rule called 2.25″. This rule was created by John Frieda to help hairdressers make their clients’ hair length as flattering as possible to the shape of their face.

Here’s what you need to do. Take out a ruler and a pencil. Put the pencil horizontally under your chin. Then place the ruler under your ear in an upright position. If the intersection of the pencil and ruler is less than 2.25″, your face is very suitable for short hair. If it’s greater than 2.25″, longer hair is probably the most flattering option for you.

“John [Frieda] studied the faces and saw that the angle of the jawbone determined whether someone would look better with short or long hair,” Robinson said. “He found an accurate, easy-to-understand measurement that clearly indicates whether a face is suitable for long or short hair. So, the next time you consider changing your hairstyle, check out rule 2.25″ to make sure you make the most flattering choice!
