Some people have the gift of observing a space, creating a vision and bringing it to life. Christian Schallert is certainly one of those people. Christian bought a 258 square meter, very run-down apartment in the trendy Born neighborhood of Barcelona. The condition and size of the apartment completely terrified Christian’s mother, but he assured her that he had big plans for the space.
With the help of architect Barbara Appolloni, Christian transformed his apartment into a lego-like grid of hidden furniture and storage solutions. He said that the design was inspired by the clean lines of a small Japanese home, as well as the space-saving furniture found aboard boats.
In fact, everything in Christian’s apartment is hidden within the walls. The wall panels open to reveal his entire kitchen, including a refrigerator, freezer, sink, stove, microwave, dishwasher and storage cabinets.
Christian’s sofa doubles as a bed. When it’s time to sleep, the bed can be folded away under the balcony. He also has a small bathroom disguised as a closet and many other storage solutions hidden in the walls of the apartment.
Surprisingly enough, Christian was able to fit up to 40 people at a time in his apartment. And his balcony is a perfect place to relax.
