Water retention, edema, or excessive accumulation of fluid in body tissues is a state where excess fluids build up in the human body. The phenomenon happens in the circulatory system or withing cavities and tissues.
It usually happens because of vitamin deficiencies, high sodium intake, venous insufficiency, chronic lung disease, liver disease, oral contraceptives, heart problems, allergies, poor circulation, pregnancy, lack of exercise, being in high altitudes, menstruation, high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, some medications, and hot weather. Water retention causes puffiness and swelling in the affected parts (usually hands, feet, ankles, and legs).
Without further ado, here are 10 home remedies to help you deal with water retention.
1. Dandelion
The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine published a study in 2009 that spotted the diuretic effects of dandelion. If you don’t know what that means, well it means that dandelion can successfully remove excess water from the body.
You can either take dandelion supplements (around 500 mg 3 times a day) or steep a teaspoon of dried dandelion herb in a cup of hot water for 10 minutes and strain, then drink the dandelion tea three times a day.
2. Parsley
Mix lemon juice with parsley juice and drink the blend or drink parsley tea. To prepare it, put 2 teaspoons of dried parsley leaves in a cup of boiling water and let it steep for 10 minutes before drinking it up to 3 times per day.
3. Epsom Salt
Epsom salt has many benefits including getting rid of water retention because it can reverse osmosis which gives it the ability to draw out excess fluids from the body. Make sure to make an Epsom salt bath by adding two cups of Epsom salt to warm bath water. Once done, soak yourself in the bath for 15 minutes three times a week.
4. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice can help you draw excess fluids out of your body. All you have to do is mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with a cup of warm, then add some honey to sweeten it and drink it once a day until you start noticing improvement.
5. Fennel Seeds
According to some studies, fennel has diuretic purposes and can help increase the output of water and sodium from the kidney. To use fennel seeds, mix one teaspoon of fennel seeds with a cup of hot water, then cover it and let it steep for 10 minutes before straining it. Make sure to drink the tea three times a day until you notice clear results.
