In many homes, the bathroom and toilet are sacred places not only because of their important functions and uses, but because they give us the chance to clean up and clear out our systems in privacy. But cleaning those two spaces is not as easy as looks because you have to deal with many stubborn and hard to clean stains that’s why most people hate cleaning those areas, but the dirty work must be done.
Keeping the bathroom and the toilet clean is a very important thing despite that being hard and disgusting. The key to success is frequency, the frequent you clean the two areas, the easier it is to clean them deeply when it’s deep cleaning day. Without further ado, here are 7 tips that can help you keep your bathroom and toilet clean.
1. Vinegar and baking soda scrub
When you flush your toilet you are giving space for mineral deposits to collect that can be developed into hard to clean stains with a nasty odor coming out of them. To solve this problem, use this method regularly. First, pour a cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl, then use a toilet brush to scrub the inside part. Once done, let the solution sit for a minute, then add a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar to the water, let everything sit for approximately 10 minutes and scrub off the stains one more time. Let the solution sit for 30 minutes before flushing it away. Make sure to do this method once or twice a week.
2. Attend to the interior tank
Sometimes the bad smell in your toilet can be coming from the interior tank that sits under the lid. That particular area can potentially have mineral buildups, dirt, and grime buildups as well. To clean it, rinse it with vinegar at least once a month and make sure to rinse the bowl as well. First, remove the tank lid, turn the water valve off, then flush out the toilet until the tank is completely empty and fill it to the overflow valve with vinegar. Let the vinegar sit for 12 hours, then take a scrub brush into the interior, don’t stop scrubbing until most of the residue and buildups are eliminated. Once done, turn on the water valve and start flushing the toilet as many times as you need until all the vinegar is removed from the tank.
3. Vacuum out the air vents
Sometimes you try your best to get rid of the nasty smell in your bathroom, but you simply can’t. The reason for that is the clogged air vents. The clog occurs mainly because of dust buildups right in between the vent slats and in the unit, which blocks air from moving out of the bathroom, which eventually causes moist accumulation that leads to mold that generates unpleasant smells and damages ceilings and walls. You can avoid all of this by vacuuming the air vents in your bathroom regularly. You can also use a nozzle extender to reach for the ceiling vents.
4. Don’t overlook the shower curtain
When you’re cleaning your bathroom, don’t forget to clean your shower curtain because it too can have nasty buildups of its own that eventually start generating bad odors. Cleaning the shower curtain is rather easy, simply take it down and throw it into your washing machine with towels. Use a gentle detergent and a warm water cycle to avoid damaging the plastic. Once done, hang the curtain in your balcony or roof and let it air dry before mounting it back into place.
5. Replace towel hooks with towel bars
Towel hooks were designed to keep towels organized and off the floor, but the gadget can cause the towels to develop mildew (which causes bad towel smells) due to the hanging position and the overall hang form of the towel. The best way to deal with this is to replace towel hooks with towel racks because the way towels hang off of them, makes them dry quicker.
