It’s always a shame when you see a big, beautiful, old house start to get run down. And to say that the house we are about to show you was dilapidated is an understatement. This house located in La Rochelle, France, had been completely abandoned and invaded by squatters. But its dilapidated state didn’t scare off a couple who bought and renovated the entire house with the help of architect Alizé Chauvet.
The once stately house was the former residence of the principal of the nearby school. However, bad circumstances fell upon him, and the house was left to decay. After seven months of renovations, the new owners came up with a contemporary design that retains the character of the original house.
Before, the kitchen was the definition of dilapidated. But now, it’s a sleek, modern kitchen that still features many unique design aspects (like the cement tiles blending in with the original hardwood floors).
Perhaps the most striking transformation is in the main entrance, where the owners have managed to preserve and restore the original staircase. Isn’t this blue striking?
The dusty attic was transformed into a beautiful bedroom with a skylight and tons of natural light.
The gross, dated bathroom is now a bright, airy space with double sinks and a walk-in closet.
What was once a scary, decrepit first floor now features a warm, cheery guest bedroom.
And lastly, this room with loud, peeling wallpaper is now a bright, contemporary nursery.
