What not to put in your fridge?

You may get surprised when knowing that some produce doesn’t require being stored in the refrigerator. First to tell is “butter”, crazy isn’t it? I trust that you’ve been storing your butter in the fridge all your life, and so is your mother? And grandmother?

We all make mistakes my friend, not many knows that butter doesn’t need to be kept cold. Just put it in a safe airtight container and store it outside the fridge. Don’t worry, It’s hundred per cent safe.

We also got “pickles”, who doesn’t have a jar of pickles in their fridge? We all do! What you don’t know is that pickle juice protects pickles as long as they remain in the water. The fridge has no role at all except cooling it!

“Tomatoes” can also live outside the refrigerator! Funny right? They only need to keep dried and in cool temperature; make sure to keep them dried, put them in a basket away from the sun. Perfect!

At last, we got “potatoes”! Ladies, store your potatoes in a bag in a dark cool place (they last for 3 weeks or so); keep them away from humidity and light.

In addition, “sweet potatoes” are also non-fridge kind of food, just keep them away from the light (don’t mix sweet and normal potatoes together).

How to keep your baked goods fresh?

Are you baking cookies and cakes during weekends? Here’s the best way to keep your homemade sweets fresh and tasty during the week.

If you got so much cookies leftovers, store them in a sealed air-tight container with a slice of white bread and parchment between the layers. Your cookies will stay soft and crispy as if they were cooked yesterday! Thank me later!

Note:

if white bread wasn’t available! you can just leave the container uncovered! No worries! I got your back.

Wondering how to store your frosting-free cakes? No fridge is needed; an airtight container would do the work!

Now it’s time to talk about bread, you absolutely can’t live without bread being in your kitchen! Homemade bread should be kept in a breadbox (the box creates the perfect humid environment to keep your bread) away from light and sun, or just keep the loaves on the counter if it wasn’t exposed to the sunlight. Also, you might need to store some of your bread slices in the freezer (only if you got so many slices that you won’t use); that’s a clever tip to remember.

RED FLAG:

NEVER EVER COVER WARM OR HOT BAKED GOODS USING TRADITIONAL WRAPPINGS (PLASTIC, FOIL).

The safest way to store your bakery product!

  1. Make sure to cool goods completely (rest on the counter for an hour or more).
  2. Wrap the goods in a plastic wrap (make sure to cover the edges) or use an airtight container.
  3. Put in the fridge and take your goods out 10 minutes before serving.

What about pastries?

Fresh pastries should be kept at room temperature in a paper bag so it keeps crispy (the paper bag helps retain the quality of the crisp and to avoid getting soft).

Pies can keep up to 24 hours in the fridge, those are good news right? You can bake your pie a day before serving it! Looks like a good plan for having guests.

Fruits in daily life!

Personally, I hate it when my fruits turn black after a day or two from buying them! I like eating them fresh, that’s why I kept trying to find the perfect place for each fruit.

First, Avocados hates being around other fruits, it produces ethylene gas which makes any near fruit to ripen faster than usual.

That’s why, keep your Avocados on the counter (ALONE). Also, bananas should be treated the same way as avocados (apples too); don’t forget to wrap the stems.

An other thing, if you have a lot of fruits and you feel like they’ll get wasted, cut them into small pieces and freeze them (a freezer bag or a container would be perfect for storage).

When to wash fruits?

I know it seems silly, but I’m reminding you to wash your fruits before eating them! WASH THEM ALL!

Wash before peeling, cutting, eating or cooking!!
