Repair tools that anyone can use around the house
Use nail polish to prevent rust circles
It doesn’t even matter if you’re male or female – you probably have some metal in your bathroom or shower. Whether it’s deodorant in a metallic container or something else, you need it to be there.
Only problem is that with the moisture and humidity, those containers can often leave rust circles on the surface you placed them on. The solution couldn’t be simpler. Just coat the containers’ bottom with nail polish, and that will prevent any of those unsightly rust rings forming in the first place.
Use a plastic bottle to save you from an overhead mess
Some projects have you drilling into the ceiling, in order to hang a hook or a light fixture, for example. There’s only one problem – it’s an unbelievable hassle. The drilling part isn’t too bad if you have a high enough ladder. The real problem starts when you have to completely cover that particular room in sheets, making it look like you live in a haunted house.
If you don’t, everything will be covered in a layer of debris you’ll never be able to get rid of. What’s the solution? Simply cut off the top of a plastic bottle and put it over the drill. Anything that falls off will pool in there, and just empty it when it gets full.
Use a rubber band to remove stubborn screws
If you took on even a small number of home improvement or do-it-yourself projects around the house, you’re undoubtedly familiar with the frustration of not being quite able to get a solid grip on a screw.
Whether it’s stripped or just out to ruin your day, it really doesn’t matter – the end result is the same. The good news is that you can spare your nerves by sticking a broad rubber band between the screw and screwdriver, and that should allow you to get the grip you need.
Use a water-vinegar mixture to remove old wallpaper
Nothing gives an old room the shot in the arm it needs quite like a change of wallpaper. We’d even go so far as to say nothing gives a place a facelift with as little effort. A small amount of effort? No, we’re not confused.
You’ve just been taking wallpapers off the wrong way! Just mix hot water and vinegar in equal parts and soak a roller in the mixture. Pass it over and the wall a couple of times and the old wallpaper should come right off.
Use a sealant to temporarily fix burst or broken pipes
There are few home emergencies quite as nerve-wracking as burst water pipes. You’ll call in a professional plumber, obviously, but what do you do until then? Just watch helplessly as water keeps pouring out of the pipe – and your water bill keeps ticking ever upwards? Heck no.
Run down to you local hardware store and buy a silicone sealant, and simply inject it around the hole as best you can. While it’s far from a permanent solution, it should buy you enough time to call in the cavalry.
Use cabinet door bumpers to prevent doors from slamming
Life is full of small annoyances, isn’t it? Even in your own home, the place that’s supposed to be your castle, there’s any number of little pet peeves that’ll slowly but surely drive you up the wall. Don’t go mental just yet, though, because at least one of them has an easy solution.
Have you got a door that prone to rattling or slamming? They’re the worst, but the only thing you need is pack of cabinet door bumpers. Stick it on the offending door, and voila – no more noise.
