Relaxing on the deck after a long week of dealing with the kids or office hassles is a great way to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. But if your deck is a bit run down, you may not feel like sitting back and relaxing.
If you want to enjoy your quiet space again without wearing gloves or inhaling toxic fumes, check out these natural methods to freshen up your deck:

  1. 1. scrub with baking soda.
This inexpensive solution is safe and easy to use. Simply wet the deck and cover the wet areas with baking soda. Use a brush to scrub the deck thoroughly before rinsing with clean water. Tip: You can do this in sections to prevent the other boards and baking soda from drying out while you work.
  2. Create a non-toxic concoction
Bob Vila recommends combining 2 gallons of hot water and 2 cups of bleach in a bucket of hot water. Then add 1/3 cup of liquid dish soap and mix. Moisten the deck by pouring in some of the soap mixture. Lather the soap solution all over the deck. Let it sit for 15 minutes before cleaning with a spray bottle.
  3. Remove grease stains from your deck
If too many backyard barbecues have left your deck looking like a grease-stained bib, try this solution for removing grease from wood: sprinkle washing powder directly on the grease stain. Leave it on for a few minutes before scrubbing with a brush and rinsing.

  1. Wash your deck with vinegar and water
Mix two cups of vinegar in a gallon of water. Pour the vinegar and water mixture over the entire deck and let it soak for 10 minutes. Use a scrub brush and scrub the entire surface of the deck. Rinse thoroughly. This is a great solution for regular maintenance.
  2. Make your own non-toxic deck cleaner.
This DIY project is inexpensive and safe for children and pets. You’ll need 2 cups of OxyClean, a scrub brush, a bucket, a garden hose and a spray bottle with a nozzle. Soak the deck in water, apply the water and OxyClean solution and scrub. From House to Home recommends leaving it on for about 10 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing again.

You may need to repeat the process if your deck is really grimy.
