After a long, snowy winter, I can say with absolute certainty that I am looking forward to summer. The days of sunshine, warmth, and barbecue are almost here, and I can’t wait to spend every possible second outside. The only downside to summer is, of course, the bugs. Where I live, flies and mosquitoes tend to be quite plentiful with the onset of hot and often humid weather. Luckily, one Facebook user shared a great tip for keeping flies and other pests away from your outdoor spaces this season.

Tabe Paxson shared a trick on Facebook to keep flies away from your porch, deck or other outdoor space. The trick? Simply place a bar of Irish Spring soap in a mesh bag and hang the bag in areas where you spend time outdoors. It may surprise you, but there are actually tons of uses for Irish Spring soap outside of the obvious purpose of using it for washing.

Pests hate the strong smell of soap. All it takes is a light breeze to keep the flies away, so you can enjoy the outdoors without having to swat them all the time. Even deer hate the smell of soap, so some gardeners choose to place nylon stockings filled with soap shavings in the garden to protect their plants.

Do you have a motorhome, camper or seasonal cabin? Place a few pieces of Irish Spring soap inside when winterizing for the season. Mice are other critters that can’t stand the strong smell of soap, so they’ll be much less likely to make your camper their home during the winter. Who knew? With temperatures soaring this week where I live, I think I should go buy some Irish Spring soap so I’ll be prepared to fend off any flies that try to ruin my good time.
